In Mississippi, a grieving family faced additional anguish when they arrived at the funeral, only to discover a different woman in the casket, adorned in their loved one’s clothing and jewelry.
Georgia Robinson, expressing immediate concern, sensed something was wrong when they gathered at Jackson’s funeral home on Nov. 3, ready to say a final goodbye to her sister, Mary Jean Robinson.
“Once we got in there and signed the books and everything, we were walking to see his body and I knew something was wrong. “I realized from a long time ago that it wasn’t her.” Robinson told WLBT.
He expressed surprise upon realizing that the unknown person in the coffin was adorned with the clothing and jewelry intended for Mary Jean.
“No ma’am, this is not my sister. This is her coffin, this is the suit we brought her, these are the jewelry we brought her, and I said these are her flowers, but I didn’t know.” Who is in the coffin? Robinson told the outlet.
He mentioned that he insisted on speaking with the director of Peoples Funeral Home.
“We told him about the mistake and he was very rude and very indifferent. He had an attitude with my son. [He] “He told us we were going to have to pay everything again,” said the distressed woman.
He mentioned that, in the end, the funeral home resolved with the family to provide new clothes for their loved one. However, they did not replace the coffin.
“I told him not to say anything to my sister who was on that lady. “He put the earrings on her anyway.” Robinson told the outlet.
“I feel terrible. Just thinking, if we had a closed casket, we would have ended up burying someone else’s loved one instead of our own.” she added.
James Stewart, funeral director, told WLBT he could neither confirm nor deny a mix-up, but emphasized that the family expressed satisfaction with the services.
