George Floyd’s killer Derek Chauvin ‘seriously injured’ in prison stabbing, AG confirms

Derek Chauvin was seriously injured after being stabbed in federal prison by a fellow inmate, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison confirmed Saturday.

“I am saddened to learn that Derek Chauvin was the target of violence,” Ellison said. “He was duly convicted of his crimes and, like any incarcerated person, he should be able to serve his sentence without fear of reprisal or violence.”

The disgraced police officer, who is serving a 22.5-year sentence for the death of George Floyd in May 2020, should be able to serve his prison sentence “without fear of retaliation or violence,” Ellison told The Washington Post via of a spokesperson.

Chauvin, 47, was attacked around 12:30 p.m. at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson. The Bureau of Prisons has not identified the attacker.

Chauvin was later listed in “stable” condition and is expected to survive, sources told ABC News.

The Bureau of Prisons has not identified the attacker.

Prison employees took “life-saving measures” before Chauvin was hospitalized, the federal agency said.

Chauvin’s attacker was also taken to a hospital for treatment.

No employees were injured and the FBI was notified, the Bureau of Prisons said.

Visits to the facilities have been suspended.

The prison has a violent history.

In November 2022, an inmate pulled out a gun and attempted to shoot a visitor in the head, but missed when the gun misfired.

In May 2018, disgraced former Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar was assaulted in the same prison and later transferred out.

Nassar was assaulted again at a federal penitentiary in Florida in July.

The stabbing in Arizona comes just a week after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected Chauvin’s appeal of his second-degree murder conviction.

Chauvin claimed new evidence shows he did not cause Floyd’s death, sparking nationwide unrest and a long-running debate over race relations in the United States.

The attack on Chauvin also comes less than a week after the release of a new crowdfunded documentary, “The Fall of Minneapolis,” which alleged that the narrative surrounding Floyd’s death was a lie.

The film was produced by Liz Collin, a former anchor at a CBS affiliate in the Twin Cities who was taken off the air during the riots and demoted because her husband, Bob Kroll, was the head of the Minneapolis police union at the time.

Chauvin’s lawyers argued that he was denied a fair trial because of the publicity surrounding the case and concerns about possible violence if he was acquitted.

They had advocated keeping their client out of the general prison population and other inmates, anticipating he would be a target.
