Who appointed an AI robot as director?
Cottesmore School, a preparatory boarding school in West Sussex, collaborated with an artificial intelligence developer to build ‘Abigail Bailey’, a robot created specifically to assist fully human headmaster Tom Rogerson.
How can the AI robot help?
It may seem like something out of Charlie Brooker’s mind, but Rogerson insists it’s a great idea and told The Telegraph that AI Abigail is available to give advice on a variety of topics, including how to support school staff members, writing school policies and even helping students with ADHD.
“Sometimes having someone or something there to help you is a very calming influence,” she told the publication. “It’s nice to know that someone very well trained is there to help you make decisions.”
“That doesn’t mean you never seek advice from humans.” You, of course, do. “It’s incredibly peaceful and encouraging to know that you don’t have to call anyone, worry anyone, or wait for a response.”
Why was the bot created?
Abigail works similarly to the popular ChatGPT AI service in that it can answer queries or generate content depending on various signals.
According to Rogerson, the AI robot has been expressly created to “have a wealth of knowledge in machine learning” and analyze “huge volumes of data” quickly. Elegant. “Being a school principal, a principal, is a very lonely job,” she said.
Of course, we have groups of directors… but knowing that someone or something is available to help you in this lonely area is incredibly encouraging.”
Cottesmore is a co-educational day and boarding school for children aged four to thirteen, with annual fees of up to almost £32,000; It was previously named Tatler’s ‘Prep School of the Year’.
How will it shape the future of teaching?
Rogerson believes that in the future public schools will also use the publicly available online robot.
Additionally, even though Abigail is his right-hand woman/AI bot, Rogerson states that robots and technology will not replace his instructors and that the school now has more (fully human) staff than ever before.
“We are moving forward preserving the fundamental values of traditional education,” he commented. “The introduction of AI is not about replacing our dedicated educators, but rather about augmenting their capabilities and ensuring our students receive the best education possible.”
