Google Fiber has opened orders for its new 20 gigabits per second fiber optic Internet service in the Triangle region of North Carolina, with installations scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2024.
Priced at $250 per month, the ultra-high-speed deal also includes upgraded Wi-Fi 7 networking equipment. Experts cite greatly reduced latency for activities like video streaming and gaming compared to the typical home Internet connection.
According to officials, the 20 Gbps throughput enables multiple simultaneous multi-gigabit data streams. Local technology executives highlight the two-fold speed increase over previous 10Gbps services. Google also launched an 8 Gbps tier for $150 per month. While expensive, Google believes cutting-edge speeds at reasonable prices will spur innovation among early adopters. The Triangle and a handful of other existing Google Fiber markets are the first regions to introduce 20 Gbps and Wi-Fi 7.
Rival ISPs AT&T and EarthLink currently max out at 5Gbps speeds area-wide. Google itself offers lower tiers, from $70 per month for 1 Gbps to $125 for 5 Gbps.
With future-ready capacity that supports exponentially growing data usage, the new service will help the Triangle region excel in economic development while meeting demanding applications.
