Google made staff reductions in its news division this week, eliminating at least 40 jobs, CNBC reported. Google laid off some of its news division employees this week. The spokesperson for the Alphabet Workers Union mentioned that between 40 and 45 Google News workers lost their jobs.
The spokesperson wasn’t sure of exact numbers, but mentioned that hundreds of people are still working on the news product.
“We are deeply committed to a vibrant information ecosystem, and news is part of that long-term investment,” the Alphabet Workers Union spokesperson said, according to CNBC.
“We have made some internal changes to optimize our organization. A small number of employees were affected. We are supporting everyone with a transition period, outplacement services and severance packages as they pursue new opportunities at Google and beyond,” they added. .
A Google employee, Rob R, a software engineer at the tech giant, also posted on LinkedIn to talk about the recent layoffs.
He described those who were fired as…”some of the best and brightest people.”
“These are some of the best and brightest people I have ever worked with and, frankly, I don’t expect the calculus behind this decision to make sense to me. We are definitely worse off without them,” he wrote.
Google’s new layoffs come amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, which has forced online platforms to share accurate information about the conflict with the public.
Prominent people have called on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) to combat the spread of false and misleading information about the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
On the other hand, Google has assured that recent job cuts will not compromise the quality of the work of its news division.
“These internal changes have no impact on our work on disinformation and information quality in News,” the Google spokesperson said.
The recent job cuts coincide with Google’s continued downsizing efforts in response to a slow growth trend and an uncertain economic environment.
In January of this year, Google revealed plans to reduce its workforce by 12,000 positions, and just last month it implemented workforce reductions in its recruiting division, affecting hundreds of jobs.
