Google Maps is considering discontinuing the ‘Driving Mode’ feature from its Android app, following the removal of ‘Assistant Driving Mode’ in 2022.
According to a report by APK Insight, certain lines of code suggest that Google Maps driving mode will be discontinued in February 2024. According to a report by 9to5Google, it seems that the latest version of the Google Maps app (v14.52) suggests that The optimized driving mode UI will no longer be available in the Android app.
Previously, the ‘Assistant Driving Mode Dashboard’ was removed from Google Maps. This feature offered a convenient home screen with a map, media suggestions, audio controls, and calling and messaging options. This was intended to replace Android Auto on phone screens, but unfortunately it did not have a positive reception from users.
Unlike the Assistant Driving Mode panel, Google Maps Driving Mode is displayed as a black bar at the bottom of the vehicle screen once the user starts navigation.
According to the report, the Google Maps Driving Mode UI offers convenient access to Assistant, Google Maps, and a launcher that displays music, podcasts, audiobooks, and other supported streaming apps.
Additionally, Google is introducing a new chatbot called “AI Support Assistant” on select help pages to offer users product assistance.
When users visit the support pages for certain Google products, they’ll find a friendly introduction from Al’s new support assistant. Feel free to chat with me to get the answers you need and resolve any account issues. You’ll find the dialog box conveniently located in the bottom right corner of your screen.
