Google search gets creative with AI-generated images tool

The new integration allows users to create images from text messages in Google Search. While innovative, questions arise about safeguards against misuse of this innovative technology.

Visual AI generation comes to Google Search

Google has integrated an AI image generation feature directly into its search engine, marking your entry to AI-created visual content. Using Google Image, still in beta testing, users can now generate images from text messages without needing to access Image itself. Until now, only select users could use Image entirely through Google’s AI Test Kitchen. For others, access was limited to special Image-powered generators.

The new integration makes Image’s capabilities available to a broader audience through Google Search. Initially, it is only offered in English to US users who opt into Google’s generative search experience. Users can create images from text seamlessly by enabling and using the feature directly in search. It will also become an option when browsing image results, allowing images to be generated if the desired images are not found.

Users can specify whether they want their image as a photograph, drawing or painting. Google will offer four custom options to choose from before downloading your preferred image as a PNG file. This is similar to Bing’s DALL-E integration for image generation, but Google promises strict content filtering to prevent offensive content.

Safeguards and limitations established to prevent misuse

To maintain community standards, Google has put in place security measures to prevent misuse. These include blocking photorealistic faces and restricting names of famous people in prompts. Initially, only users over 18 years of age will have access and all images will have watermarks and metadata that will identify them as generated by AI.

However, doubts remain about the effectiveness of these safeguards. Bing faced similar challenges, with users bypassing protections. Instances of people bypassing the protections of other AI features, such as Meta AI stickers, further highlight the issue of misuse.

Continuous improvement through user feedback

Google acknowledges that its AI generator may be flawed. That is why a voluntary participation approach was chosen. To improve the tool and address issues, users can provide feedback on any shortcomings they find. Unlike Bing, Google has not indicated whether it will charge for the feature. More generative capabilities added to Google Search

Beyond image generation, Google Search Generative Experience introduces other features. One is conversational search powered by integration with Bard, similar to Bing and ChatGPT. Users can also compose custom text content, adjusting the length and tone of the generated output. They are currently available in the US for those who choose to participate in Google Search Labs.

Google’s inclusion of AI image generation means a breakthrough in AI content creation. But its success depends on maintaining strong safeguards and addressing risks. As this innovative feature evolves, it opens up new possibilities for improving visual content creation, if used responsibly.
