Several Republican members of Congress are backing an effort to elect former President Donald Trump as House speaker next week, according to a Republican lawmaker.
“I have been contacted by several members of Congress willing to support and deliver nomination speeches for Donald J. Trump to be Speaker of the House,” Rep. Troy Nehls (R-Texas) tweeted Thursday.
“Next week is going to be HUGE,” he joked.
Nehls, 55, was one of the first House members to publicly express his support for Trump’s presidency, pledging to nominate the 77-year-old former president for the job just hours after Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif. ) was removed from the presidency in a historic vote on Tuesday.
Nehls was not among the eight Republicans who voted to strip McCarthy of his chairmanship.
Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Greg Steube (R-Fla.) – neither of whom also voted to impeach McCarthy – have also been outspoken supporters of giving the gavel to Trump.
“Trump as president is gaining momentum!” Steube tweeted on Thursday.

“We need someone to unite our conference. And I honestly believe that [Trump] the only person who can do that,” Steube explained during an appearance on Fox News.
“He is America’s agenda first. “We need to get the America First agenda on display in the House of Representatives.”
Greene has called Trump her “only” choice for president and believes the 2024 Republican presidential primary front-runner would accept the job if elected.

“I think if we elect President Trump as president, he would accept the job,” Greene tweeted, calling it “a stark contrast to the current regime.”
“If Trump becomes Speaker of the House, the House chamber will be like a Trump rally every day!!” he said in a separate tweet.
“It would be the House of MAGA!!!”

While candidates for House speaker do not have to be sitting members of Congress, House GOP rules currently prohibit those with felony allegations from serving in the office.
“A member of the Republican leadership shall step aside if charged with a serious crime for which a sentence of two or more years in prison may be imposed,” state the Rules of the Republican Conference of the 118th Congress.
Trump faces a total of 91 charges in four criminal cases, and up to 712 years and six months behind bars if convicted of all of them.

House members have been informed that the vote to elect a new speaker will not take place until next week.
Trump received a vote for president in January on the 7th, 8th and 11th ballots, despite only being nominated on the 11th by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), who engineered McCarthy’s impeachment.
