Nagpur Startup rewards drivers for following traffic rules
Well, this new startup is trying to complement this punishment system by introducing rewards for those drivers who make an effort to follow the rules of the road. After the company showcased its startup at the 108th Indian Science Congress Exhibition, a pilot was launched in collusion with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the Nagpur Municipal Corporation on West High Court Road in Nagpur.
The mapping devices were installed at the various traffic lights and the company ensured their rigorous testing. The startup project is actually being funded by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
Nilesh Kolharkar of Social-Impact Innovations Pvt. Limited told TOI: “Usually traffic offenders are penalized, but we have observed that most citizens follow the rules. We have devised this system to recognize and appreciate such citizens. We are currently working on ten traffic signals at West High Court on the stretch between Laxmi Nagar and Seminary Hills, where the pilot project was launched.”
The startup makes use of RFID technology to make the system work
For those curious about how the rewards system works, the company uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. They have installed these devices on traffic signals at the test site. In addition, a label will be delivered to the citizen who has connected to the application. This label will be placed on the vehicle.
As long as this tagged vehicle passed a device connected to the traffic signal, the RFID would take note that the driver has followed the traffic rules. If they did, 10 reward points would immediately be credited to your account in the app called ‘Traffic Rewards’.

There are various national and international brands on the app, Kolharkar shared, “We have partnered with more than 80 international and local brands like KFC, Pizza Hut, PVR, Radisson Blu, Pharmeasy and others where reward points can be used. Users would be getting exclusive benefits. We want to create a positive culture instead of fear of punishment. We have been rigorously testing the devices for a long time.”
People online gave mixed reactions to the idea. Some were enthusiastic: “As someone who devoutly follows road signs, I think this is a brilliant idea! The level of awareness and responsibility for traffic in the city is miserable! This is a great initiative to reward responsible citizens.” Others had their doubts: “When something is free, the product is you.”
