GTA commercial auto theft
Peel police reportedly arrested 15 people, which was followed by an investigation into a car theft ring that allegedly stole fully loaded commercial vehicles and then sold their cargo to unwitting buyers. Additionally, during the reversal, police said the dubbing began in March and was a joint forces operation between Peel Regional Police, York Regional Police, Toronto Police Service, Halton Regional Police and Police Ontario Provincial. The result of the investigation was that six locations within the GTA were reportedly attacked and warrants were executed. The statement was issued by Detective Mark Haywood of the Peel Police Auto and Commercial Crimes Unit during a news conference in Mississauga on Wednesday morning.
The detective further added that he is impressed with the hard work of the investigative team and is pleased to share that the investigation resulted in the recovery of 28 containers of stolen cargo valued at $6.99 million. In addition, 28 stolen tractors and trailers valued at $2.25 million were recovered. The total value of the recovery was reportedly $9.24 million. In addition, Peel Regional Police Deputy Chief Nick Milinovich also spoke at Wednesday’s press conference. He said that as one of the country’s largest transportation hubs, the Peel region is often the target of organized commercial car and cargo theft.
He added to the statement, saying that with five major highways running through his region, approximately $1.8 billion worth of goods pass through the region each day and often see the proceeds from cargo theft and auto theft being used to fuel and finance organized crime. On the other hand, the police affirm that the detainees have been accused of crimes ranging from possession of property obtained through crime, theft of motor vehicles and tracking of stolen property. However, you should refer to the full list of suspects who were arrested in connection with the investigation which can be found on the Peel Police website. Haywood said the criminal ring was not targeting any specific type of commercial vehicle and that they stole a variety of cargo.
