Private eyes are now poking into the inner workings of the legal loophole between legendary soft rock duo Hall and Oates.
Daryl Hall, 77, sued John Oates, 75, Oates’ wife, and another manager earlier this month, alleging that Oates’ plan to sell his share of a joint venture would violate their business agreement, they revealed. court documents.
The Nashville judge who temporarily blocked Oates’ move Wednesday ordered more documents in the case to be unsealed after the lawsuit filed under seal on Nov. 16 obscured details of the case.
Now, open records show that Chancellor Russell Perkins has issued a temporary restraining order against Oates and his trust to stop the sale of his stake in Whole Oats Enterprises LLP to Primary Wave Music for 15 days or until an arbitrator issues a ruling.
The lawsuit was first filed after Oates held solo shows in which she sang songs that Hall took credit for writing.
Sources familiar with the conflict have told TMZ that the legal battle concerns “the basic rules of who can sing what as a solo artist, along with money issues, of course.”
Hall’s lawyers had decided to seal certain filings in the lawsuit, arguing it is a private matter between the singers, famous for 1970s and ’80s rock hits like “You Make My Dreams (Come True)” and “Rich Girl.” .
Although Perkins ordered some of the documents unsealed, they did not reveal exactly what is at stake in the lawsuit.

In the lawsuit, Hall’s attorneys claimed that Oates and his team violated a confidentiality provision by sharing their business agreement in a letter of intent to Primary Wave, which they say should legally deny the sale.
“The entire unauthorized transaction is the product of an undisputed breach of contract,” Hall alleged, according to the filing.
The case will now be heard during a court hearing on November 30.
Primary Wave has maintained a “significant interest” in the band’s catalog for more than 15 years, documents show.
In 2021, Hall told Sky News that he was unhappy with previous agreements and warned artists to keep their publishing rights, saying “all you have is that.”
“Oh, at first, they sold it and I didn’t get the money,” he said.

They were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2014.
“We have the incredibly good problem of having so many hits,” Oates said before the duo put their show back on tour in 2021, after COVID-19 halted their tour.
“Believe me, it’s not a hard task to play those songs because they’re really great.”
In 2015, the duo teamed up to sue a Brooklyn-based food company that sold a granola snack called Haulin’ Oats.
