A photographer captures a view from India’s first dark sky reserve in Ladakh
Well, one sky watcher was beyond excited to visit the observatory. He packed his bags and traveled to the town located in the eastern part of Ladakh. The reserve not only promises to increase astronomical tourism, but also promotes ecological activities, raises awareness about astronomy, and boosts scientific research.
Photographer Vaibhav shared fascinating views of the observatory on Instagram. As the blogger made his way to the incredible site and experienced one of the most enticing views to be had in India, he shared snippets of what he felt on his excursion in his caption.
He wrote: “Hanle has the darkest sky I have seen and captured to date, even the milky way is amazing here. This place is completely out of this world, it has no ties to human contamination, it doesn’t even have mobile connectivity. Being the closest to nature, this place makes a person see through himself inside. Exploration can make anyone bound by spells.”

Ladakh UT administration proposed the reserve in December 2022
It was in December 2022, when the idea of the reserve was proposed by the Ladakh UT administration. Now, the view is open to all tourists. The reserve covers an area of 1,073 square kilometers and is situated within the Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary.
It is located next to the Indian Astronomical Observatory, which is the second highest optical telescope in the world, situated at an altitude of 4,500 meters. The reserve, which is situated near the Indian Astronomical Observatory, makes it a prime location for stargazing enthusiasts to spend their time picking apart bright spots in the night sky.
Given the novelty of the reserve in India, many travelers are waiting for their chance to visit the place. That’s why Vaibhav’s exploration of the night sky at Hanle garnered increasing support from people on the internet.
One user wrote: “I really want to visit this place” while another was completely overwhelmed: “My eyes fill with tears every time I see this, if I ever saw this in real life I would cry my heart out, that’s what you call.” overwhelming! This is number 1 on my bucket list!” The view of the Milky Way from the reserve certainly surprised many.
