The German Shepherd’s road to recovery began in early May, when images of the pup circulated among organizations in Metro Detroit.

“I got some private messages and photos of this dog carrying her stuffed toy while it was raining in downtown Detroit. Seeing Nikki for the first time was heartbreaking and heartbreaking,” Gail Montgomery, co-founder of the Almost Home Animal Rescue League, tells PEOPLE. .

Montgomery was shown footage of Nikki alone in the rain, with a stuffed animal in her mouth. Montgomery put her emotional reaction to the photo of the German shepherd into action.

She contacted South Lyon Murphy Lost Animal Recovery for help locating the dog and getting her off the street. Montgomery’s “queen of the catch” arrived and was able to pick up Nikki, who was carrying her pet.

Montgomery eventually found out that Nikki had been living alone for months, probably because her owner had died. The dog survived thanks to the kindness of others and asked for leftovers.

“We took her to an emergency room, where she was treated.” Unfortunately, she has heartworm disease, as well as other internal problems. “On Nikki’s first vet visit, they discovered plastic bags, twigs and bones in her stomach,” adds Montgomery.

Nikki was placed in a foster home by Almost Home, a foster-based animal rescue league, after seeing the vet, where she is still receiving therapy. “She was totally stressed out,” Montgomery says of Nikki before the rescue.

“His body really wasn’t working properly because he had been on the roads for so long.” Nikki is recovering physically and mentally, revealing more of her personality each day, thanks to a balanced diet of chicken and rice and a constant dose of love from her adoptive family.

“She doesn’t need her suffocation anymore. She’s always hugging her foster parents,” Montgomery says, adding, “but she’s not obsessed with it like she was in Detroit when she was out and about.” Nikki has been going to the spa since she moved in with her adoptive family and generally “lives life.” “They’re giving her so much incredible love,” adds Montgomery, adding that “the kinder you are to her, the more loving and kind of her she becomes of her.”

The Almost Home co-founder, who founded the nonprofit with her daughter, hopes Nikki’s story will encourage animal lovers to consider pets that don’t get the care they need.
