Steve Franklin captured video of the large bear meandering up a hill on a narrow path toward hikers on the Hidden Lake Trail. According to Franklin, the grizzly bear appeared from the trees at the top of the slope near Siyeh Bend. Video shows the trail was steep and rocky, making it impossible for hikers to pull over and let the bear pass.

The grizzly bear can be seen in the video making its way onto the trail near Siyeh Bend as other hikers gently drift away from the area. Someone offscreen can be heard warning hikers, “Dude, that grizzly bear is right behind you.” Franklin claimed that the bear appeared from the trees at the top of the slope. “He took the path of least resistance, just walking down the path,” she explained to Storyful.
The wildlife photographer described the trail as steep and rocky above and below ground. “It was not possible for the hikers to leave the trail to allow the bear to pass, especially the older gentleman who was wearing a knee brace,” he said.
According to the National Park Service (NPS), Glacier National Park is home to approximately one thousand brown and black bears.

When possible, bears try to avoid humans. However, bear attacks do occur. While bears are not known to be particularly violent towards humans, the National Park Service recommends some precautions during an encounter with a bear.
