Hour-old baby found alive in shopping bag by dog walker in sub-zero temperatures: police

A baby girl who was not even an hour old was found in a shopping bag in sub-zero temperatures in east London by a dog walker, police said.

The abandoned newborn, whom hospital staff named Elsa after the main character in the Disney movie “Frozen,” was discovered at the intersection of Greenway and High Street South in Newham by a dog walker.

The dog walker heard the girl crying and then found her inside the bag, according to Metropolitan Police Chief Superintendent Simon Crick.

The Metropolitan Police said the baby was less than an hour old and was found wrapped in blankets inside the shopping bag around 9:15 p.m.

Temperatures dropped to a bitter 24 degrees Fahrenheit and the dog walker “kept the girl warm” until an ambulance arrived.

“I am delighted to report that she was not injured in any way,” Chief Superintendent Simon Crick told a news conference. He also revealed that the baby is “fine.”

Crick said the dog walker didn’t know how long the baby had been there and encouraged the mother to call for help.

“We are extremely concerned for his well-being as he will have been through a traumatic experience,” Crick said. He said the mother would most likely need medical attention after giving birth and advised her “no matter what her circumstances are, seek help.”

Police are watching CCTV cameras around the busy junction and are encouraging anyone who sees something to come forward.
