John Spearing is described as a ‘remarkable man who trained some great winners’, he died at the age of 82 after a long illness. John Spearing was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2021 but lived and enjoyed more than 50 years of his life as one of Britain’s most powerful and popular horse trainers. He was the second-longest-serving coach in the country when he finally handed over his license just five days ago.
Cause of death of John Spearing
He won over 800 races on flat and over jumps, most notably with Run and Skip (his horse) who took the Welsh National and Anthony Mildmay, Peter Cazalet Memorial Chase, and finished fourth behind Dawn Run in the Cheltenham Gold Cup at 1986. Spearing was Britain’s second-longest-serving trainer at the time of his retirement in January, despite sustaining life-threatening injuries in a serious galloping accident five years ago.
On a Friday night, his daughter said that her father was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2021 and passed away yesterday. She further added that this news is discouraging for the entire family. In addition, she claimed that her father was under excellent care at the Lawns Nursing Home in Kempsey. (the nursing home where he was treated)
He went on full license after being asked to train the disappointing Glendale, with whom he won 13 races, and spent the last three decades of his career with the Rimeli family.
Run and Skip won four long-distance pursuits in a busy 1985-86 season, despite not being easy to train, but Spearing did an outstanding job. His daughter praised him and said that daddy did an amazing job. Also, she and her brothers used to have the same opinion about the jacuzzi, they also put ice and salt in the water, and after school they would spend time running and jumping.
One of his closest friends, Peter Scudamore, expressed his gratitude, saying it was a privilege to ride Run and Skip (his horses) who were not easy to train at all. He further said that John was a perfect trainer and a good horse feeder and lastly paid tribute by giving him all the respect from him.
His fellow trainer and old friend David Evans said that he was a very good trainer and used his wisdom and hard work to seize this opportunity from a limited spot. He further said that John used to be very reserved by nature.
Andrew Thornton rode his horses once and claimed that his horses were always fit and fine. He praised John for all of his hard work over the years. Finally, we can conclude that John Spearing was an excellent and hard-working trainer at heart and used to take care of his horses.

So sorry to hear of the passing of John Spearing, his knowledge of horse racing was second to none, combined with his dry humor it was always a pleasure to talk to him at the races. The photo is of winning connections from Captain Sedgwick, who won three races for John. pic.twitter.com/pHfI0JABXO

I am very sorry to hear that John Spearing died today after a long battle with cancer. It was a pleasure to meet him and an excellent trainer who did very well mainly with cheap horses during a long and rewarding career. He handled Run And Skip with a master’s touch. https://t.co/r9FsPZ38SN

Sad news about John Spearing. He trained many favorites under both codes over the years, but Run And Skip will always be most fondly remembered. May he rest in peace. pic.twitter.com/r6bIchKBoz

A sad day with the news of the passing of trainer John Spearing. Forever remembered here for the heroic exploits of Rapid Lad, the last to first merchant, winner of 13 races on the Westwood. John was always chuffed to have a bar named after him. pic.twitter.com/5RJo9YKwRe

Very sad to hear about the passing of John Spearing. In 1969 John had his first winner here as a permit holder, Wrens Yarn, also ridden by himself. Here is a more recent photo of John in our Steel Pillar Winners Enclosure. #RIP #Horse racing @nigekirby pic.twitter.com/LcqaV4GiFV

We mourn the passing of John Spearings. He came to our rescue at Christmas 2016 by allowing us to have the yard free at Kinnersley. Jane and I appreciate the great times we shared with him, particularly when he was training my brother Richard’s horses. What a character and brilliant coach. pic.twitter.com/Uj8frVWA0T
