‘I love TV’: November 21, World Television Day

World Television Day is celebrated on November 21. It was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1996 with the objective of promoting the global exchange of programs on peace, security, economic development, and social and cultural issues.

On the date chosen to commemorate World Television Day, the First World Television Forum is remembered, which took place at the UN headquarters in New York on November 21 and 22, 1996.

It should be mentioned that important figures from the television medium met in this forum to consider how they could strengthen their cooperation and promote the responsible use of this medium.

World Television Day is also an opportunity to reflect on the role of television in society. Television is a mass medium that has a great impact on people’s lives.

Therefore, it can inform, educate, entertain and promote positive values. However, it can also be used to spread messages of hate, violence and discrimination.

Television is usually enjoyed with the family.

Specifically, the United Nations has identified a series of objectives for World Television Day, including:

  • Promote the global exchange of television programs that promote peace, security, economic development and social and cultural issues.
  • Emphasize the role of television in education and training.
  • Promote the responsible use of television, particularly with regard to the protection of children and young people.

Each year, the United Nations General Assembly chooses a theme for World Television Day.
