India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has ordered the removal of 22 YouTube-based news channels, four of which are from Pakistan, for allegedly spreading false information to mislead viewers. The ministry issued an order on Monday to restrict 22 YouTube channels, three Twitter accounts, a Facebook account and a news website, according to an official statement.
With this decision, the ministry has issued directives to block 78 YouTube-based news stations and many other social media accounts on national security, Indian sovereignty and integrity, public order and other grounds from December 2021.
According to the ministry, the restricted YouTube channels had a combined audience of more than 260 million people and were spreading fake news and organized disinformation on social media on sensitive issues in terms of national security, Indian foreign relations and law and order. public.
Without naming them, the ministry said: “18 Indian and four Pakistani YouTube news channels have been blocked as a result of the latest ban order.”
Various YouTube channels were used to post “fake news on various topics like Indian Armed Forces, Jammu and Kashmir etc,” according to the ministry. Certain anti-Indian content posted from various social media accounts running in a coordinated manner from Pakistan was also ordered to be blocked.
“Indian YouTube channels posted a considerable amount of fraudulent content related to the current situation in Ukraine, with the aim of jeopardizing India’s foreign relations with other countries,” he said. According to the ministry, the banned Indian YouTube channels were using templates and logos of specific TV news shows, as well as photographs of their newscasters, to trick viewers into believing the content was genuine.
“Fake thumbnails were used, and video titles and thumbnails were constantly being changed to increase virality on social media.” Systematic anti-Indian fake news was also found to have come from Pakistan in some cases,” the report added.
The ministry stated: “The Government of India remains dedicated to ensuring a genuine, trustworthy and secure online news media environment, as well as blocking any attempts to undermine sovereignty and integrity, national security, international relations and the public order of India.
