Indian Matchmaking’s Pradhyuman Under Fire For Labelling Domestic Violence As ‘Marital Issues’

Netflix’s “Indian Matchmaking” has secured a spot as one of the platform’s most-watched and talked-about shows. Yet its popularity comes hand in hand with a constant undercurrent of scrutiny.

The series, which delves into the intricate world of arranged marriages in India, has sparked ongoing debates over what some perceive as glorifying problematic ideals, particularly the unsettling fixation on finding the ‘perfect’ match or partner.

Amid the sea of many other problems that the show seems to force down our throats as ‘to why marriages are important,’ another example is of rich Mumbai brat Pradhyuman Maloo, who made many appearances on the show and shamelessly discussed his “prospective matches.”

He also rejected over 150 women. In the first season, the participant was in search of a companion and turned down 150 profiles. However, in the second season, he tied the knot with Ashima Chauhaan, a connection unrelated to Sima Taparia.

Recent reports indicate that Ashima Chauhan has lodged a formal complaint (FIR) against Pradhyuman Maloo, alleging instances of domestic violence.

Ashima said Maloo subjected her to physical and emotional abuse during their marriage.  She incorporated into the official report that her family allegedly faced threats of blackmail and unwelcome advances.

Pradhyuman Maloo responded by expressing his lack of awareness regarding the filed complaint (FIR); however, he mentioned ongoing efforts to address their “marital issues” through legal means.

He did not directly respond to the allegations. Nonetheless, the concern arises from the potential trivialization of domestic violence into mere “issues” within a marriage, given the clear distinction between such matters and criminal actions.

Rushali says about Pradhyuman that he doesn’t seem like that kind of a person (who would resort to domestic violence).I don’t know the truth but what I do know is no one who doesn’t know a person intimately can gauge whether a person resorts to domestic violence or not.

I can hear Seema aunty screaming at the top of her voice saying, “you must learn to compromise” or something like that. This is really sad though. I hope there’s justice

Classic example that irrespective of social status and class, these things happens and need to be fought at all levels

Knew it from the first episode that something is not right with this guy and no matter who he marries, it won’t last.Despite not being arranged by Seema Aunty, his wedding was featured in the show to flaunt his wealth. He must’ve paid the producers for covering his wedding.

What comes as a bigger shock is how Maloo called Ashima’s accusations a ‘marital dispute.’

In an interview with Hindustan Times, said, “I don’t know about it. To my knowledge, we are in settlement talks with lawyers to resolve our marital issues amicably.”

In an era where 2023 sees women striving for equality, respect, and recognition within society, Maloo’s actions stand as a stark reminder that progress is still to be made.

This also strongly emphasizes the reality hidden beneath the façade of reality shows, revealing a much darker and somber aspect that contrasts with the superficial perception they initially present.

While packaged as entertainment, these shows can often obscure the complexities, challenges, and even distressing situations that participants and individuals involved may experience behind the scenes.
