Indian Professionals Prefer ‘WFH’: Survey Claims 71% Prefer Flexible Work Hours Over High Pay

With offices globally starting to encourage return-to-office plans, employees in India aren’t eager to return to a five-day office routine like before the pandemic. A recent survey by job platform Indeed shows that 71 percent of Indian professionals prioritize flexibility when seeking jobs.

The survey gathered information from over 1,200 job seekers in India and found that flexibility “includes the ability to work from home, set your hours, and take breaks as needed,” CNBC Make It reported.

Professionals are increasingly valuing flexibility, as they’ve seen improved productivity and work-life balance by being able to decide when and where they work.

Indeed’s survey revealed that 70 percent of employed individuals sought job opportunities that included hybrid or remote work options.

Additionally, 67 percent considered the job’s compensation, encompassing salary, benefits, health insurance, and family leave.

However, this stance contrasts with numerous global companies urging employees to return to physical offices.

This discrepancy could potentially result in higher attrition rates within firms, particularly in instances like TCS, where many resignations occurred after the call for office return, primarily among women.

“Employers’ attitudes towards remote work remain at odds with the preferences of job seekers in India,” Sashi Kumar, Indeed India’s head of sales, told CNBC Make It.

“The latter remains keenly interested in remote work, whereas employers are far less likely to mention ‘work from home’ in the job ads they post.”

The survey also revealed that 63 percent of employees favor a hybrid arrangement, enabling them to work from home on certain days and from the office.

However, only 51 percent of the 561 surveyed employers confirmed offering this option.
