An Indiana man sentenced to his own 85-year sentence after accidentally recording the murder of his mother’s boyfriend in a voicemail.
Cody Allen Wade, 33, received a heavy punishment Wednesday after being found guilty last month of the 2020 murder of Carl Haviland.
Wade had left a voicemail on his mother’s phone seconds before stabbing Haviland four times, but did not hang up before carrying out the attack.
His mother was also present and saw her son kill her boyfriend.
“The defendant repeatedly stabbed Carl Haviland not only in front of his own mother, but did so despite her efforts to physically prevent him from committing the crime,” the judge wrote in a sentencing order obtained by People.
After stabbing Haviland, Wade kicked and taunted his victim.
The killer planned his crime in advance, prosecutors said.
Wade left a cookout and headed to his mother’s house in Brazil, a city 60 miles southwest of Indianapolis, stopping along the way at another man’s house to tell him he was about to kill someone. , according to the documents.

He was sentenced to 60 years for the murder with an additional 15 years added as he was found to be a habitual offender.
Wade also received 10 years for two separate counts of felony assault on a public safety officer with injury and received concurrent sentences on two other charges: felony assault on a public safety officer and misdemeanor resisting law enforcement. county records show.
