Untrained Somalian Athlete At International Event Goes Viral

The clip going viral on the internet is from the sports event’s women’s 100-metre race. This year marked the Summer World University Games’ 31st playout. Athletes from around the world joined the event and participated in the games.

Among the usual high-ranking countries was a player from Somalia, which later became the epicentre of the contest.  The viral clip features athlete Nasra Abukar Ali from Somalia. The runner reportedly took 21 seconds to complete her 100-metre sprint. The main point of rage on the internet has been Ali’s deficient performance and the obvious lack of training.

Her performance has sparked a wave of criticism from people online as they continue to slam Somalia’s Ministry of Youth and Sports for sending an “untrained” athlete to the official international event.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports should step down. It’s disheartening to witness such an incompetent government. How could they select an untrained girl to represent Somalia in running? It’s truly shocking and reflects poorly on our country internationally. pic.twitter.com/vMkBUA5JSL

The clip was initially shared by Somalian medical and health professional Elham Garaad on Twitter. In the clip Elham shared, the Somalian athlete clearly stands out for all the wrong reasons as other players take their stances and stretch their limbs before the sprint.

Among the professional athletes, the Somalian player looks awkward and lost. She struggles to take her stance at the beginning of the race and falls behind quite quickly once the starting pistol is fired.

At one point in the video, Ali’s lack of training was so evident as the camera panned on the other athletes to catch the winner, and while the camera focused on them, Ali was completely left out of the frame. The Somalia player took much more time to touch the finish line compared to her opponents and was even seen skipping by the end of her sprint.

All of this added up to make sports enthusiasts on the internet extremely upset and disappointed that the officials had not taken their job seriously. Garaad mentioned in her post how she wanted the officials to step down from their positions after watching the clip.

She wrote, “It’s disheartening to witness such an incompetent government.” She questioned the rationale behind choosing an untrained player to participate in the international event and felt discouraged by the poor representation of the country at an international event.

People raged about the inadequate performance of the athlete, citing alleged nepotism as one of the possible reasons behind such a debacle. While some did celebrate the fact that Ali’s male counterpart had performed notably well during the event.
