What is Monopoly if you don’t know yet?

Many gambling problems arise because people don’t agree with the rules, which, according to one board game specialist, is mainly because none of us follow the rules as outlined in the instructions.

Amber Crook, Editor-in-Chief and Board Games Specialist at Game Rules, has exposed many of the “made up” rules that many of us employ when playing Monopoly, hopefully saving you from a family dispute this Christmas.

What are some of the misconceptions?

Many families play Monopoly with the condition that money paid in taxes or fines must be placed in the center of the board. When someone reaches the free parking space, they receive a nice bonus and can collect all the money accumulated in between.

However, Amber claims that this is not an official rule.

Going to jail as a property owner in the game can result in a number of conflicts, with some claiming that you can’t collect rent if people land on properties you own while you’re in jail. However, Amber claims that she can continue managing her properties while in prison if she pays attention.

How come other rules are also frequently broken?

We’ve all heard that getting out of jail involves a double roll of the dice. Most people, however, will play with the stipulation that if you fail to get a double roll three times in a row, you’ll be instantly out of jail free.

This is not true, because the rules state that if you don’t get a double, you must pay the bank M50 to get out. Amber went on to say: “The rules actually state that on your third roll, you still have to pay a fine of M50 to the bank, before you get your piece out of jail according to the number shown on the die.”
