iPhone 14 New Design Leaked and Rumors

The iPhone 14 Pro from Apple is expected to be the phone that shakes up the iPhone line by possibly having a design that is very different from the iPhone 13 Pro. So far, the rumors have hinted at everything from the end of the notch to the return of Touch ID.

This is probably long overdue, since the iPhone 13 Pro, as good as it is, isn’t a clear step up from its predecessor. Since the iPhone 11 Pro, the iPhone hasn’t made a big step forward in general.

Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra and Google’s Pixel 6 Pro are strong competitors, so it looks like Apple will need to bring its A-game to the iPhone 14 Pro. From what we’ve heard so far about leaks and rumors, it sounds like Apple’s next Pro model might be able to do just that. And the iPhone 14 Pro might be very different from the other iPhone 14 models in some important ways.

Here is what we know so far about the iPhone 14 Pro and what we hope to see.

iPhone 14 latest rumors (Updated May 6)

  • Apple is rumored to be looking into ways to make sure that its suppliers don’t get affected by Covid-19 so that the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 models stay in stock.
  • So far, rumors suggest that the battle between the iPhone 14 and the Google Pixel 7 this fall will be quite interesting.
  • The new pill-and-hole camera and Face ID cutouts that could replace the display notch are very clear in a leaked photo of alleged iPhone 14 Pro display panels.
  • iPhone 14 mock-ups show how the design changes for each model, like how the iPhone 14 Pro might have cutouts and a bigger camera module.

iPhone 14 Pro rumored release date and price

Apple is very secretive about any information about its next iPhones, especially about when they will come out and how much they will cost. But based on when other iPhones have come out, we think it’s safe to say that the iPhone 14 range will come out in September.

Based on how Apple has done things in the past, the iPhone 14 might be announced on Tuesday, September 13, and it might come out 10 days later, on September 22. This is just a guess, though, so don’t take it too seriously. See our page about when we think the iPhone 14 will come out for more information.

In late March, it was said that all iPhone 14 models, including the Pro, would be going through engineering validation testing (EVT). This would mean that the designs of the four phones that are expected to be in the range are now set in stone. Hopefully, this includes all of the rumors we’ve heard.

Since the coronavirus pandemic has caused problems with supply chains, Apple seems to be taking steps to reduce the chance that the iPhone 14 range will have to wait a long time for production problems at its major suppliers.

LeaksApplePro, a source that can be trusted, says that three of the four iPhone 14 models are likely to go up in price, but this is just a rumor.

If this is true, the iPhone 14 Pro would cost $100 more than the iPhone 13 Pro, which starts at $999. And the price of the iPhone 14 Pro Max could go up by the same amount, reaching $1,199. Anyone hoping to buy a high-end next-generation iPhone 14 at launch would definitely feel the pinch of this price increase.

Check out our early look at the differences between the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Pro, which are the biggest in years.

iPhone 14 Pro design

Jon Prosser, a tipster, has shown a set of renders that he says are based on leaked information and show that the iPhone 14 Pro could change in big ways.

Prosser’s renders show that the back of the iPhone 14 Pro has a row of three cameras. But if that sounds good, you might be disappointed by some rival schematics that show the iPhone 14 Pro models look a lot like their iPhone 13 counterparts. The raised camera array is back, and it’s even bigger on the iPhone 14 Pro. The new phones are also rumored to be 0.2mm thicker than the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.

The camera module is also expected to get bigger, according to other reports. Ming-Chi Kuo, a trusted Apple analyst, says that this is because a 48MP camera needs a bigger module to fit inside. So, another leak says that the iPhone 14 Pro’s corners (but not the Pro Max’s) will get rounder to match the rounded corners of the new module.

Various rumors about the iPhone 14 Pro also say that the now-infamous display notch will be gone. Ross Young, a display analyst, thinks that Apple will offer a pill-shaped cutout and a punch hole for Face ID. This means that there will be two cutouts.

A leaker on Weibo is said to have made a drawing of what the iPhone 14 Pro could look like. But we’re not sure if this would be better than the notch.

There seems to be a leaked supply chain photo that shows the display panels for all four iPhone 14 models. This gave these rumors more weight.

The iPhone 14 and 14 Max look like they will keep the display notch, but the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro max look like they will get rid of the notch in favor of a pill-shaped cutout and what looks like a punch-hole camera or sensor.

Young and the analyst firm Display Supply Chain Consultants have brought up the idea of a cutout for two cameras on the iPhone 14 Pro once again. The standard iPhone, on the other hand, won’t get a screen without a notch for another year. This makes going pro with the next iPhone even more appealing.

Another set of CAD renders has shown us what the iPhone 14 Pro could look like if it didn’t have a notch. The asymmetrical look doesn’t seem very Apple, but it’s definitely unique. Some iPhone 14 mock-ups posted by Alibaba and shared by Macotakara give us the best idea of what all the design changes will add up to. In the case of the iPhone 14 models, you can see the larger camera module and the two cutouts on the front screen. Macotakara says that iPhone 13 Pro cases won’t fit the iPhone 14 Pro because of this larger module. There were early rumors that Touch ID could come back as a fingerprint scanner under the screen. But it’s still too early to say how likely this is. Analyst Ming Chi-Kuo thinks it will be a few years before there is an iPhone with Touch ID or Face ID under the screen. This would have been pretty disappointing, since having an alternative to Face ID is very useful in this age of masks.

But with iOS 15.4, Apple changed Face ID so that it can tell if a person is a real user even if they are wearing a mask. It works very well, which means Apple may not need biometrics that is based on fingerprints.

There was only one leak about the colors of the iPhone 14 Pro, and it has since been taken down. A Chinese leaker said that this year, along with the usual Graphite, Silver, and Gold Pro iPhone colors, there would also be a new dark purple option.

iPhone 14 Pro USB-C

There are rumors that the iPhone 14 Pro will finally have a USB-C port. This would make sense since many of Apple’s other devices already have USB-C ports. Newer rumors, on the other hand, say that Apple will keep using Lightning over USB-C, but will switch to updated Lightning ports that can transfer data faster using USB 3.0. This is because the EU is getting closer to making USB-C the standard way to charge phones and other portable devices.

Some people would have to have the iPhone 14 Pro with USB-C. In fact, the iPhone’s Lightning connector is probably its worst feature because it can break over time. This can make it hard for your phone to charge. Apple probably won’t give up on Lightning unless it has to, since the standard and its ecosystem of accessories are already so well-known.

iPhone 14 Pro display

The 120Hz dynamic refresh rate display on the iPhone 13 Pro was one of the most important improvements it brought. By using an LTPO panel, the screen’s refresh rate could go from 120Hz to as low as 10Hz when a fast rate was needed. This helped save battery life.

Based on what we know so far about the iPhone 13 Pro, we don’t think this will change. But a next-generation LTPO panel could be used, like the one in the OnePlus 10 Pro, which could save more power.

On the other hand, the standard iPhone 14 models are expected to have a 90Hz screen, which would be better than the iPhone 13’s 60Hz screen but not quite as good as the Pro phones.

So far, the rumors say that the iPhone 14 Pro will keep its predecessor’s 6.1-inch screen and the iPhone 14 Pro Max will keep its predecessor’s 6.7-inch screen. According to a leak from Shadow Leak, the iPhone 14 Pro will have the same screen sizes as the iPhone 13 Pro.

iPhone 14 Pro cameras

Don’t expect a big change in the number of cameras on the iPhone 14 Pro. The Pro phones are likely to stick with the standard main, ultrawide, and telephoto array. Since Apple phones are often on our list of the best camera phones, that’s not a bad thing.

But one leak says that the main camera on the iPhone 14 Pro will be 48MP, which would be a big change from the 12MP cameras Apple has been using for years. Even though Cupertino’s computational photography is some of the best out there, the iPhone 14 Pro might be able to handle light and details better if it had more megapixels. We could be at a point where megapixels matter again to Apple.

But a reliable Apple rumor source says that the standard iPhone 14 models will keep their 12MP cameras and only the Pro models will get a 48MP main camera.

The ultrawide camera hasn’t been said to change, but we wouldn’t be surprised if some work wasn’t done to improve the field of view and get rid of some of the edge distortions.

And the telephoto camera could get a zoom boost since an Apple patent shows that the company is working on a zoom camera that looks like a periscope. If this feature were to be added to an iPhone for the first time, it would be on the iPhone 14 Pro. But Apple expert Ming-Chi Kuo says that the periscope camera won’t be in the iPhone 15 until 2023.

One of the first rumors we’ve heard about the front camera comes from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, and it applies to both the Pro and regular iPhone 14 models. Kuo thinks that the front camera will be able to autofocus, which would make FaceTime calls look better. The analyst also thinks that the iPhone 14 will have a wider aperture than the current iPhone (f/1.9 vs. f/2.2). This could help take better photos in low light.

iPhone 14 Pro specs and battery life

There are no solid rumors about the specs of the iPhone 14 Pro, but it wouldn’t be hard to guess that, like every new iPhone, it will have a better chip.

After the A15 Bionic, we’d expect to see an A16 Bionic chip, which would be faster and better in every way. People expect that chip to move from a 5nm process node to a 4nm process node. There is also a chance that Apple will make a 5G modem.

In the end, the iPhone 14 Pro is likely to be much faster than the A15 Bionic in terms of its processor, graphics, and neural processing. It’s not clear how much this will matter to the average user, but don’t think that the iPhone 14 Pro will have trouble with any task.

Kuo says that only the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max will get the A16 Bionic chip and that the iPhone 14 will stick with the A15 chip. This would be a first for Apple since its new iPhones have always had better chips. This is backed up by a second leak from Shadow Leak. Apple’s supply chain may have been affected by the chip shortage of the past two years, but this is just a guess for now.

But now things are even more confusing because a new report, based on information from insiders, says that the iPhone 14 will use the same version of the A15 Bionic chipset that is in this year’s iPhone 13 Pro models. According to teardowns, the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini only have 4GB of RAM, while that chip has 6GB. So that would be an upgrade of sorts, but it wouldn’t be the same as a full chip upgrade. Because of this, the iPhone 14 Pro is more appealing than the standard model.

According to a recent leak, the iPhone 14 Pro will have 8GB of RAM. Since Apple’s focus on efficiency has allowed it to do more with less RAM than devices like the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, increasing the iPhone 14 Pro’s RAM could make it an absolute powerhouse.

Still, the iPhones we have now aren’t slow, so having the extra RAM might be too much. But analyst Jeff Pu thinks that all four of the iPhone 14 models will have 6GB of RAM, which seems odd to us.

There have been no solid rumors about storage for the iPhone 14 Pro yet, but it is likely to go up to 1TB.

So far, there have been no rumors about the size or amount of the battery. But we’re sure that the iPhone 14 Pro will match or beat the 11 hours and 42 minutes that the iPhone 13 Pro did in our battery test. In this test, the phone constantly reloads web pages over a cellular connection until the battery dies. The iPhone 13 Pro Max lasted for 12 hours and 16 minutes, so we expect the iPhone 14 Pro Max to do the same or even better as Apple improves the efficiency of its chips and phones.

Concerning 5G, we think the iPhone 14 Pro will use a new, smaller 5G modem chip. The smaller size should mean that it runs on less power and that the battery could have more room to grow. That would mean that the iPhone 13’s battery life, which is already very good, can be made even better.

It looks like Qualcomm’s new 5G chip, the Snapdragon X70, won’t help the iPhone 14 Pro keep up with the times. The chip will have the first 5G AI processor. This will allow the modem system to use AI to optimize a phone’s antenna and better manage 5G beams going to and from a 5G phone. Qualcomm thinks this will be especially helpful for mmWave-based 5G networks in places like stadiums and arenas. AI can also help manage 5G signals below 6GHz, though.

In addition to being able to connect to cell networks and Wi-Fi, the iPhone 14 Pro could also connect to satellite networks. This feature was first talked about before the release of the iPhone 13 last year. It didn’t make it in time for those phones, but reliable rumors say that emergency satellite communications could be a feature of the iPhone 14. The idea is that when you are in a place without a good cell phone or Wi-Fi service, you can send text messages to emergency services over satellite networks to let them know where you are.

iPhone 14 Pro outlook

The iPhone 14 Pro could be the phone that many of us have been waiting for. The Pro models are expected to be a real step up from the iPhones we’ve seen in the past few years. Sure, it won’t be too different from the iPhone 13 and iPhone 12, but we think this next generation of iPhones will introduce a design language and features that will set the standard for future iPhones. Now that the iPhone SE (2022) is out, here’s what we can learn about the iPhone 14 from the iPhone SE.

The iPhone as we know it could change a lot if it didn’t have a notch, had Touch ID, had a main camera with more megapixels and had a USB-C port. And that would set a standard for other smartphones to follow if they want to get on our list of the best phones.
