Some owners of the new iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max have claimed that their phones have gotten a little hotter than previous iPhones over the past week and a half. We found that the phones can get hot while working on our review, “sometimes to the point where it was uncomfortable to hold without a case,” and this has been confirmed by other reviewers and users.
The issue is so real and significant that Apple issued an official response over the weekend, which was shared with MacRumors and other media. Apple claims that the main cause at first is the “increased background activity” that occurs when consumers set up their new phones for the first time (something I’ve also experienced on older iPhones and iPads and is quite common).
However, Apple says it has discovered “a bug in iOS 17 that is affecting some users” and that specific apps like Uber, Instagram, and the game Asphalt 9: Legends are “overloaded.”[ing] system” and causing heat problems. The company is working with the developers of those apps to create fixes that will be provided through the App Store.
Apple clearly states that the phone’s A17 Pro chip and titanium frame are not to blame. Some speculate that one or both of these new elements (as well as the A17’s new 3nm manufacturing process) were to blame for the heat issues. However, Apple seems to believe it can address the more serious issues with the software, and the company says the improvements won’t hurt the A17 Pro’s performance.
Whether due to heat or other causes, the supply of new Apple phones continues to meet demand. If you order an iPhone 15 Pro today, you won’t get it until the end of October. It depends on the color and capacity of the iPhone 15 Pro Max, but most models won’t be available until mid-November.
