A grieving Israeli father whose wife, two young children and mother-in-law were taken hostage by Hamas described his overwhelming guilt and worry that his loved ones were out there alive and wondering, “Why isn’t Dad coming?”
Yoni Asher returned to her mother-in-law’s home in southern Israel after Hamas approached on October 7 to learn that her family, including her daughters, Raz, 5, and Aviv, 3, had been kidnapped. and carried by terrorists.
“The worst thing for a father who has three daughters, a wife and two small babies is guilt. It is this guilt.” he told CNN.
“I’m thinking about them sitting there thinking, if they’re alive, ‘Why isn’t Dad coming?’”

Asher last spoke to his family that same day, when his wife, Doron Asher Katz, 34, discreetly called him to inform him that terrorists invaded her mother’s home in southern Israel.
The devastated father spoke of his beloved wife, stating, “I just want her to know that I love her with all my heart and I’m sorry.”
Asher became emotional and burst into tears as he described the overwhelming sense of guilt he feels at being without his family, especially his two young daughters, who he fears will forget him if they are gone for too long.
“I’m afraid of being forgotten. I’m afraid that they won’t recognize me, you know, for children a day is like a month for us. I want to be on their mind like they are on mine,” she admitted through tears.
“I have to be strong for them. Today I am going through the fight of my life. I don’t know what will happen, but today you live or die. I will do anything, whatever the means,” he added.
