To Jeff, the electric guitar looked like a very intriguing piece of wood with all those knobs and switches. Even before he knew how to play the guitar, Beck knew that he needed an electric guitar.
When Beck was six years old, he heard Les Paul perform “How High the Moon” on the radio for the first time. That caught his attention and he asked his mother about it. Then, at the age of ten, Beck participated in a church choir. Les Paul was the first electric guitarist to impress Jeff.
However, Lonnie Mack was that rock guitarist who had a major influence on him, among many others. After growing up a bit, he also tried to build his own guitar. He would glue and bolt on cigar boxes for the body and a rough fence post for the neck with control lines and model airplane frets. When he finally wanted to learn the guitar and didn’t have one, he used to borrow it from others and then started learning.
