1776 – The Liberty Bell is rung to announce the Declaration of Independence
On July 8, 1776, a 2,000-pound copper and tin bell now known as the “Liberty Bell” rings from the spire of the Pennsylvania State House (now Independence Hall) in Philadelphia, summoning citizens to the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence.
1951 – Paris celebrates its 2000th anniversary
On July 8, 1951, Paris, the capital of France, turns 2,000 years old. In fact, technically a few more candles would have been needed on the birthday cake, since the City of Lights was probably founded around 250 BC.
1972 – The “Great Grain Robbery”
On July 8, 1972, the Nixon administration announced an agreement to sell $750 million worth of grain to the Soviet Union. (However, the Soviets were also involved in the secret purchase of subsidized American grain, resulting in what critics dubbed “The Great Grain Robbery.”)
1994 – North Korea’s “Great Leader” dies
Kim Il-Sung, North Korea’s communist dictator since 1948, dies of a heart attack at the age of 82.
