Kalpana Chawla was an aerospace engineer and astronaut who was born in India and later became a US citizen. Kalpana was part of Mission STS-87. During this mission, Ella Kalpana became the first woman of Indian origin to fly into space.

Kalpana Chawla Age
Kalpana Chawla was 40 years old when she died due to the breakup of the space shuttle Columbia. Kalpana started working at NASA Ames and did CFD research on V/STOL concepts. Furthermore, most of his research appears in technical journals.
In 1991, Kalpana became a US citizen, and in 1993, he joined Overset Methods as Vice President and Research Scientist. Kalpana applied to join the NASA Astronaut Corps shortly after becoming a US citizen. Following his selection, Kalpana joined the NASA Astronaut Corps in 1995. Almost two years later, in 1997, Kalpana was selected for her maiden flight.
Kalpana Chawla Mission
Throughout his career, Kalpana was part of two major space missions. Kalpana’s first mission was STS-87, for which she was selected as Mission Specialist 1. The spacecraft for this mission was Columbia. The STS-87 mission was completed and the spacecraft landed on December 5, 1997.
The main objective of the STS-87 mission was the development of technology and research in microgravity. Then, in 2000, Kalpana was chosen as a crew member for the STS-107 mission (on the same space shuttle). In 2003, Kalpana embarked on his last mission, which resulted in tragedy.
Death of Kalpana Chawla
After the success of her first mission, Kalpana was selected to be a part of STS-107. The central objective of the STS-107 mission was the investigation of microgravity. The STS-107 mission crew consisted of 7 members, including Kalpana Chawla. The mission was launched on January 16, 2003, after suffering multiple delays due to various problems.
Kalpana’s second space mission ended tragically when the spacecraft disintegrated upon re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere, killing all 7 crew members. The orbiter’s left wing thermal protection system was damaged by foam debris during launch. As the space shuttle began to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere, the damaged portion of the wing overheated, causing loss of control and disintegration.
This all happened when the space shuttle was flying over Texas. Kalpana was Mission Specialist 2 on STS-107. The investigation began immediately after this tragic accident. Authorities found Kalpana’s remains along with other crew members. Kalpana’s remains were cremated and scattered in Zion National Park.

On December 2, 1983, Kalpana married Jean-Pierre Harrison. Kalpana was 21 years old when she married Harrison. After her tragic death, the filmmakers approached Kalpana’s husband about making a film about her life.
However, Harrison refused to make a film about his wife’s life, as he wanted to keep her life private.

Kalpana forced his initial education at Tagore Baal Niketan School in Karnal. After completing his school education, Kalpana studied at Punjab Engineering College and earned a degree in aeronautical engineering. When Kalpana was studying for her, her professors discouraged her from pursuing this field due to the limited opportunities for women.
Kalpana was determined in her decision and confident that this was the ideal profession for her. In the 1980s, Kalpana went to the United States and earned a master’s degree from the University of Texas. Additionally, Ella Kalpana earned a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from the University of Colorado.
