Kalpana Chawla Age

The STS-107 mission crew consisted of 7 members, including Kalpana Chawla. The mission was launched on January 16, 2003, after suffering multiple delays due to various problems.

Death of Kalpana Chawla

Kalpana’s second space mission ended tragically when the spacecraft disintegrated upon re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere, killing all 7 crew members. The orbiter’s left wing thermal protection system was damaged by foam debris during launch. As the space shuttle began to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere, the damaged portion of the wing overheated, causing loss of control and disintegration.

This all happened when the space shuttle was flying over Texas. Kalpana was Mission Specialist 2 on STS-107. The investigation began immediately after this tragic accident. Authorities found Kalpana’s remains along with other crew members. Kalpana’s remains were cremated and scattered in Zion National Park.
