Knocking Trump out of the primary would ‘destroy the country,’ says former Obama senior adviser David Axelrod

Former Obama senior adviser David Axelrod warned Friday that a court decision removing former President Donald Trump from the primary vote would “tear the country apart.”

“I have very, very strong reservations about all of this,” Axelrod said on CNN on Friday.

“I think it would tear the country apart if he were actually prevented from running because tens of millions of people want to vote for him.”

Axelrod said Democrats’ best bet to beat Trump is in the polls.

“I think if you want to beat Donald Trump, you’re probably going to have to do it at the ballot box,” he continued.

The former political adviser argued that Maine’s decision to eliminate the state’s Republican primary favorite plays into Trump’s narrative that the Democratic Party is only “going after him” because of his presidential bid.

“Much of the motivation for [Trump’s] The candidacy was like a legal defense strategy,” Axelrod said.

“I wanted to create an idea… that they’re after him because he’s running for president and they’re trying to stop him from being president.”

Axelrod said the left’s effort to impeach Trump has backfired and that he has only “gained” popularity since his numerous accusations.

“We’ve done this experiment and he’s only won since he started being charged,” he said.

“What you thought might be kryptonite to him turned out to be battery packs, and this is important to him,” Axelrod said.

A Colorado Supreme Court ruling earlier this month removed Trump from the ballot under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment.

Colorado’s secretary of state then announced that she would keep Trump on the ballot pending the state Republican Party’s appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Colorado is a Democratic-leaning state that is not expected to be competitive for Republicans in November.

On Thursday, December 28, Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows disqualified former President Trump from the state’s presidential primary vote.

Bellows also cited Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which prohibits those who “engage in insurrection” from holding public office.

The US Supreme Court is expected to make a final decision on Trump’s eligibility.
