Sadly, 16-year-old Kole Shewmaker passed away at Indianapolis Methodist Hospital Wednesday night from his injuries, according to Columbus Police. On Tuesday afternoon, Kole was a passenger in a car that was involved in an accident on South Marr Road. Investigations into the details of the incident are currently underway. Three people were injured in a two-vehicle collision on South Marr Road Tuesday afternoon and the Columbus Police Department is currently investigating the incident. According to Lt. Matt Harris, spokesman for the Columbus Police Department, CPD officers were dispatched to the 700 block of South Marr Road around 1:30 p.m. following reports of a single-vehicle accident with injuries.
The investigation revealed that 16-year-old Luis Y. Otero of Columbus was driving a 2009 Chevy Cobalt in the 700 block of South Marr Road when he lost control of the car. Cheryl A. Hanner, 66, of Norman, Indiana, was driving a 2016 Toyota Corolla when the Chevy crossed the center line and struck the car in front of her. Otero and Kole Shewmaker, 16, of Columbus, who was traveling with him, were injured in the collision. Otero was also transported by IU Lifeline to IU Methodist Hospital, where her condition is serious. Shewmaker was flown by IU Lifeline to Indianapolis Methodist Hospital, where she is in extremely critical condition.
Additionally, Hanner was transported to IU Methodist Hospital for treatment of significant injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The Bartholomew County Accident Reconstruction Team is currently investigating the crash. The community is in shock and disbelief over the tragic and untimely death of Kole Shewmaker. Everyone was deeply heartbroken when news of her tragic passing spread like wildfire. Due to his sad involvement in a catastrophic car accident, Kole’s life was brutally cut short.
