The man convicted of the 1996 murder of Kristin Smart was critically injured after being attacked inside a California state prison on Wednesday, according to this attorney.
Convicted murderer Paul Flores was transferred to an outside hospital at Pleasant Valley State Prison in Coalinga, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said.

The 46-year-old is serving a 25-year to life sentence for killing Smart in 1996, when they were both college students at California Polytechnic State University.
Flores’ attorney, Harold Mesick, said he was notified by correctional officials about the attack, but he didn’t know much else.
“I just pray for his recovery,” he said.

The corrections department did not confirm the attack on Flores.
An investigation into his injuries is ongoing and details will not be immediately released, a department spokesman said.
Flores had only been in the Fresno County jail for about a week after he was transferred there from North Kern State Prison, Mesick said.

Flores killed 19-year-old Smart during an attempted rape in 1996 in their college dorm room where they were both freshmen.
He was the last person seen with Smart as he walked her home from an off-campus party.
While Smart’s body was never found, she was declared legally dead in 2002.

He received his prison sentence in March.
