Who has crowned Messi as ‘Sportsman of the Year’?
According to Time, the Argentine superstar has already had a dramatic impact on the American athletic scene, which has been slow to embrace soccer in the past.
“Lionel Messi managed this year to do what previously seemed impossible, when he signed with Inter Miami: turn the United States into a soccer country,” said Time magazine. Messi, 36, made his debut in Miami in July after a controversial departure from Paris Saint-Germain.

The World Cup winner also turned down a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia in favor of a new chapter in Major League Soccer. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner made an immediate impact on Miami’s fortunes, helping the team win the expanded Leagues Cup, a cross-border competition between MLS and Mexico’s top flight.
Messi concluded the season with 11 goals in 14 appearances in all competitions, but an injury near the end of the season prevented him from helping Miami advance to the playoffs.
What does Messi have to say?
Time described Messi as saying his first option after PSG was a fairytale return to Barcelona, but the deal fell through due to the club’s financial difficulties.
“I tried to come back and it didn’t happen that way,” Messi said, adding that he is also “thinking a lot” about joining the influx of foreign players into the Saudi Pro League.
“It was Saudi Arabia or the MLS, and both options seemed very interesting to me,” Messi explained to the magazine.
