In a surprising turn of events, a library recently welcomed a book that had been lost for nearly a century. The long-lost literary treasure lent by an adventurous reader in 1927 has finally returned home. This extraordinary return has piqued the interest of bibliophiles and historians alike, shedding light on a bygone era and demonstrating the continuing value of books as portals to the past.
After 96 years, historian Benson Lossing’s book ‘A Family History of the United States’ has been returned to the St. Helena Public Library. In 1927, it was overhauled.
According to the Washington Post, Jim Perry returned the library book he discovered while cleaning his home in Napa, California. “This is an old book that’s been in our family for five generations,” Perry recalls saying at the St. Helena Public Library front desk.

“How amazing is this! Someone borrowed this book from our library 96 years ago. It just goes to show that it’s never too late to return a library book,” the St. Helena Public Library stated on Instagram. The returned book is A History of the United States by Benson Lossing. The book was loaned on February 21, 1927 and returned in 2023.
“One of my staff members brought it over, came up and said, ‘Oh, someone had returned that book,’ and they thought it was cool,” Chris Kreiden, director of the Saint Helena library, told KSBW. It was an extremely old book and we had no idea how old it was.” he added to KSBW news. None of us have ever seen a library book checked out in 1892 or anything else. And to have it in this collection for that long is marvelous”.
