Maine mass shooting live updates: Suspect Robert Card ‘really believed he was hearing people say things’ about him at bowling alley and bar murder sites, family says

Eighteen people were killed in Lewiston, Maine, when a gunman opened fire at a bowling alley and a nearby bar Wednesday night, local police officials and Gov. Janet Mills said during a news conference Thursday morning.

Robert Card, 40, has been named a suspect in the fatal shooting and is still on the loose as police have 8 warrants for his arrest for murder.

At least 13 other people were injured in the massacre that began around 7 p.m. on Wednesday, officials said at the news conference, although earlier reports indicated the number of injured was around 50.

Card, originally from Bowdoin, Maine, should be considered “armed and dangerous,” officials reiterated Thursday, urging anyone who believes they have seen him not to approach him and contact police immediately.

Card is an Army Reserve-trained firearms instructor, law enforcement sources in the state said Wednesday night. He was stationed at a National Guard base in Saco, Maine, where he had threatened to shoot, sources said.

Card had reported “hearing voices” recently and was reportedly committed to a mental health facility over the summer, but was released after a two-week stay.
