Maine shooting suspect Robert Card is ‘able to hide for a long time,’ says neighbor who has known his family for decades

LEWISTON, MAINE — Alleged Maine mass shooter Robert Card is a deer hunter “able to hide for a long time if he doesn’t want to get caught,” according to a longtime neighbor of his family.

Card, 40, is the subject of a massive manhunt for a shooting Wednesday night that left 18 people dead and 13 others injured in multiple locations.

Rick Goddard, 44, lives less than a mile away from Card’s parents in Bowdoin, where the suspect grew up, and has known the family for decades.

“It’s their playground. I mean, he grew up here. He knows the area very well. He is able to hide for a long time if he doesn’t want to get caught. “There are a lot of places in the woods where you can be and never be seen,” Goddard told The Post.

“They are very dense and thick forests. If you know the area, there are plenty of places you can hide… you could never see something like that from a plane or helicopter.

“The trees are so close together that you can barely walk between them. It is so thick that you can barely see three meters into the forest. If I were going to hide, that’s what I would do. “I would hide somewhere like that.”

Goddard said he also went to school with Card, although he was a few grades above him at Mt Ararat High.

He described the Cards as quiet farmers who had been in the area, a small community about 16 miles from Lewiston, for several generations.

“They are very calm people,” he said.

“His entire family owns hundreds of acres around my house. They are a family of farmers. “They are reserved, but they are good, hard-working people.”

Goddard said he saw SWAT teams invade Card’s parents’ home around 7:30 a.m. Thursday.

“I didn’t believe it,” he said when he saw his neighbor’s name on the news.

“I didn’t think it could be something really possible. It does not make any sense”.

Card is an outdoors expert and a trained marksman in the U.S. Army Reserve who was among the best marksmen in his unit, according to reports. He enlisted in the military in 2002 and is an oil supply specialist.

According to Goddard, he last saw the suspect about two weeks ago “when he and his father were planting the field across the street,” but he hadn’t spoken to Card in a couple of years.

Instead, he recalled a conversation he had with Card’s brother, who lives in another house on the same street as his parents and had also been in the military, last fall.

“He hunts,” Goddard said of the suspect.

“I talked to his brother last year and he was looking for a deer that he shot… in the fields near his father’s house.

“I saw a flashlight at the back of my house, so I went down to see who was there. She was simply telling me that she was trying to help her brother find a deer.”

Everything we know about the mass shooting in Maine

At least 18 people have been killed and more than a dozen injured after a gunman opened fire at two separate locations in Lewiston, Maine.

Police identified the possible suspect as Robert Card, 40, and believe he may have been driving a white Subaru Outback, which was later located in Lisbon, about 8 miles from the shooting locations, according to CentralMaine.com.

Lisbon residents were also ordered to shelter in place, and authorities warned that Card could be armed and dangerous.

Maine State Police advised local residents and businesses to lock their doors and shelter in place.

The police have released this photo of Card.

On Wednesday night, emergency personnel were called to separate the shootings at Sparetime Recreation bowling alley and Schemengees Bar and Grille Restaurant, according to the Sun Journal.

The death toll almost matches the annual number of homicides in the state of Maine: 29 homicides were reported in 2022.

Lewiston is a city of about 38,000 people nearly 30 miles north of Portland.

President Biden was notified about the mass shooting.

He said the brother told him Card was using a new $2,000 thermal scope at the time.

“The person they’re looking for bought the scope,” Goddard said.

Minutes later, he allegedly attacked Schemengees Bar & Grille about two miles away, killing seven more inside the establishment and one outside.

Three other people who were wounded at the two locations were later pronounced dead at area hospitals, while 13 other people were wounded by gunfire, including a 10-year-old girl.
