Makar Sankranti 2024, one of our most important festivals, falls on January 15. Astrologically speaking, the celebration commemorates the entry of the Sun into Capricorn, known in Sanskrit as Makar. It is said to bring longer days and more sunlight for crops. Each region of India celebrates this important harvest festival, infusing it with its own customs.

1. Up to Ladoo
A delicious dessert that you should not miss during Sankranti is til ladoo. These delicious bite-sized treats, made with brown sugar and sesame seeds, can brighten your day. Jaggery and sesame seeds are staples of Sankranti festivities.
2. Puran Poli
Puran Poli is another delicious Maharashtrian dish that adds a particular touch to Makar Sankranti. It is a sweet and crumbly filling made with moong that is combined with a sweet flatbread. People love this favorite breakfast dish not only on Makar Sankranti but also on Diwali and Naraka Chaturdashi.
3. Makara Chaula
Fresh rice is used to make the traditional Odisha dessert known as Makara Chaula. It is made by combining milk, sugar cane, jaggery, banana, freshly grated coconut and clean, dry, powdered raw rice.
Additions include pepper, ginger, chenna (cottage cheese) and fruits like apple and pomegranate. This “uncooked” food is first offered to the gods and then shared with loved ones.
4. Pinni
Pinni is a delicious winter delicacy from Punjab that is mainly made with almonds, wheat flour, jaggery and ghee. During the festivities of lohri and Sankranti, people prepare it frequently. According to traditional beliefs, this bite-sized delicacy is so packed with ghee and almonds that it helps protect against health problems associated with winter.
5. Gajak
This thick, crunchy sweet, made simply with brown sugar and peanuts, is a winter classic. Gur, another name for jaggery, is especially lucky on Makar Sankranti.
6. Come Pongal
Made with rice and moong dal, this South Indian food is similar to a modified form of Pongal. A generous amount of freshly ground pepper and cumin add flavor, making it a tasty and healthy one-pot dinner.
Ven Pongal is made with ingredients like freshly grated coconut, chopped cashews and curry leaves. Ghee is added as a finishing touch for flavor and health benefits.
7. Ellu Bella
Ellu Bella is a unique combination of fried chickpeas, peeled peanuts, finely chopped dried coconut and jaggery or sesame seeds. It is considered very auspicious and is shared with family and friends.
