Man breaks world record for 60-hour online gaming marathon

Barnabas Vujity-Zsolnay, a Hungarian chef, set a world record in online gaming instead of cooking. He set the record for the longest video game marathon playing an MMORPG, clocking 59 hours and 20 minutes in World of Warcraft.

That’s almost two and a half days of uninterrupted gameplay, breaking the previous record by a staggering 23 hours and 31 minutes. But the victory was more than just bragging rights.

Barnabas now holds the Guinness World Record for both the longest MMORPG marathon and the longest World of Warcraft marathon.

According to Guinness World Records, World of Warcraft, like other MMORPGs, allows players to create characters and explore a virtual environment in which they can fight monsters and achieve objectives together with other players.

Barnabas filled the time by completing dungeons with his companions and fighting other players in designated arenas. However, after playing for 30 hours, he claims that he became bored because he ran out of things to do, and around 45 hours in he started hallucinating.

“I noticed mild hallucinations starting to form,” he told GWR. “It was fun but also difficult to concentrate during the live broadcast.”

What was the criteria for this world record?

According to each record’s “longest marathon” criteria, Barnabas earned five minutes of relaxation time for every continuous hour of play. Only during these periods could he eat, take a nap or go to the bathroom.

Barnabas says it was “really hard to cope” with being tired, but he never felt the need to ingest caffeine, opting instead to drink only water. He believes he drank about 15 liters during his record attempt.

Barnabas is no stranger to marathon gaming sessions; He has played World of Warcraft daily for almost a decade and, as a teenager, he frequently played up to 10 hours during the week and 16 hours on weekends.
