Man drowns in lake in front of SoFi stadium in California

A man drowned in the lake outside SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, on Friday, the second death to occur at the man-made body of water since the stadium opened in 2020.

The unidentified man, believed to be in his early 20s, entered the lake around 9:30 p.m., but never surfaced the water, Inglewood police Lt. Cilia Islas told the L.A. Times.

Police said a dive team was immediately dispatched to search for the missing man in the 15-foot-deep lake.

The man’s body was found shortly before 11 p.m. by rescuers, who attempted to administer CPR to revive him.

After being able to save the man without success, he was pronounced dead at the scene, Islas told the outlet.

Police said an investigation has been launched into the man’s death, as Islas described the incident as an accidental drowning.

Authorities are currently not releasing the name of the victim.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the individual’s family and friends for their loss. “Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.”

It is unclear if the victim was attending the event.

His death marks the second time a person has drowned in the lake outside SoFi Stadium, home of the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams and Chargers, since the venue opened in September 2020.

A 45-year-old man had previously died after jumping onto the artificial spine in July 2022.

Stadium security guards saw the man under surveillance jumping a fence in the stadium parking lot before entering the artificial lake.

Divers from the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Special Enforcement Bureau recovered the man’s body from the lake more than three hours later.

Dubbed “River Lake,” the 6-acre man-made lake contains nearly 11 million gallons of water, according to Architect Newspaper.

Rivers Lake also features multiple waterfalls and is designed to be an aesthetic addition to the stadium grounds.
