An Indiana-wide search was launched Wednesday after a murder suspect was accidentally released from a jail, just two days after being locked up, authorities said.
Kevin Mason, 28, was “wrongfully released” from the Marion County Detention Center in Indianapolis on Sept. 13 due to a booking error made by inmate clerks, the sheriff’s office announced Tuesday.
The suspect had been on the run for two years before his arrest earlier this month on multiple warrants, including the 2021 shooting death of a 29-year-old man in Minnesota, alleged parole violation and possession of firearms. fire.

“Our employee who was checking it saw three Minnesota holds, she obviously didn’t realize what she was doing,” Martin said.
“It is a critical error, a critical error. They are identified very specifically by the originating agency that made it. They have a specific identification number, they are all different and the case numbers are all different.”
Two inmate employees have since been fired for the error, Martin said.
“This was a mistake. This shouldn’t have happened. Mason should not have been released from our custody. “This was discovered shortly after his release,” he added.

“For 27 months I’ve been trying to get some kind of justice and now I feel like we’re back to square one,” the victim’s sister, Shannell Catchings, told FOX59.
“I felt like not only is it Indiana’s fault, but I feel like it’s Minnesota’s fault.”
“I don’t know what happened in that jail and even with the person who was fired, it’s like, okay, we don’t feel any kind of relief because at the end of the day, he’s still out,” he added.
Meanwhile, authorities searching for Mason claimed they kept his accidental release secret for nearly two weeks to maintain a “tactical advantage” over him.

Mason is described as 5 feet 9 inches tall and with a cross tattooed under his right eye. He also has “SUB” tattooed on his chest and an unidentified neck tattoo.
