What made Masala Chai top the rankings?
The culinary guide said, “Chai masala is an aromatic drink originating from India,” in the description of an Instagram post announcing the award. It is made with sweetened milk and black tea flavored with a masala mixture, usually consisting of ground ginger, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, and black peppercorns.
Discussing its controversial roots, the guide emphasized its connection to the British tea trade. The publication clarified: “The British looked for other markets that could satisfy the high demand for black tea, a firm European favorite, because the Chinese had a monopoly on the tea trade in the 19th century.”
The food guide stated on Instagram: “Chai masala is an aromatic drink that comes from India. It is prepared with a mixture of milk and sweetened black tea, flavored with a masala mixture that usually consists of ground ginger, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon , and black peppercorns.
