Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy pledged to support Donald Trump in his 2024 election campaign and expressed his willingness to join his Cabinet, while criticizing the former president’s campaign promise to exact “retribution.” to his supporters.
McCarthy (R-Calif.) seemed determined that Trump will be the Republican nominee in an interview broadcast Sunday.
“Yes. And if Biden remains the Democratic nominee, I think Donald Trump will win,” the Californian told CBS Sunday Morning in response to a question about whether Trump got the nod from the Republican Party.
When asked if that was an endorsement, McCarthy responded that he “will support the president, I will support President Trump.”
Over the summer, McCarthy shook up the Trump world by questioning whether the 45th president would be the strongest Republican standard-bearer.
He later backtracked and spoke repeatedly with the former president, who largely stood by during the presidential mutiny in October.

For months, McCarthy repeatedly stopped short of issuing a formal endorsement in the 2024 race, but he made sure to praise Trump.
McCarthy announced last week that he will leave Congress at the end of the year. He was deposed as president in October after eight Republicans organized an uprising with a solid bloc of Democrats to overthrow him.
When asked if he would accept a Cabinet position, McCarthy kept the door open.
“In the right position. Look, if I’m the best person for the job, yes,” McCarthy responded.
“I worked with President Trump on many policies. “We work together to win the majority, but we also have a relationship where we are very honest with each other.”

In that same interview, McCarthy also questioned Trump’s message of retaliation.
During his speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference at the Gaylord National Convention Center in March, Trump promised to be “payback” for his supporters.
Since then, Trump has repeatedly reiterated the phrase “retribution” on the campaign trail.
“You need to stop that,” McCarthy told CBS of the retaliation messages. “He needs to stop that.”
McCarthy downplayed concerns that Trump won’t listen to him, maintaining that the former president has a story that he will “adjust when he knows all the facts.”

“The United States does not want to see the idea of retaliation,” McCarthy continued. “If it’s about rebuilding, restoring and renewing, then I think you’ll see it.”
“I’m not going to change who I am. And I’m not going to stop giving you advice. And look, I lost the Speaker’s job. Maybe I don’t have the best advice. But one thing I know is that I love this country.”
Late last month, McCarthy appeared to propose former South Carolina governor and U.S. ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley as Trump’s vice president pick.
“If you were making purely political choices, what it looks like today is that the anti-Trump vote is going to Nikki Haley,” McCarthy said at the New York Times’ DealBook 2023 summit.
“But the question is: whoever you choose will serve? So that’s another question you should have. And it’s about adding.”

McCarthy also criticized Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), who led the crusade to unseat him.
“I think history will show who Matt Gaetz really is,” McCarthy said, declining to say whether he will support a primary challenge against him.
