Forget the bright lights of the big city: members of Generation Z are moving to a house in the country.
The younger generation of adults is moving to the Great Plains and Western mountains in search of lower costs and a “simpler liver,” data from StorageCafe and LendingTree found.
In 2021, Generation Z represented the largest percentage of people moving to South Dakota (16%), North Dakota (15%), Idaho (15%), Iowa (14%), and Kansas (14%), either to rent or buy, according to StorageCafe data obtained by Insider.
When looking to settle down and buy a home, the young adult generation (average age 22) was most interested in getting a mortgage in Salt Lake City (22.59%), followed by Oklahoma City (22.36%) and Birmingham , Alabama (20.79%), LendingTree reported.
“Members of Generation Z are increasingly attracted to simpler living in their housing options,” Emilia Mann, senior analyst at StorageCafe, told Insider.
“Unlike millennials, who often gravitate toward D.C., Washington [state] and Illinois, members of Generation Z tend to favor lower-density states, from the mountainous terrain of Montana and Idaho to the plains of Kansas and Nebraska.”

Looking at absolute numbers, StorageCafe found that the three states with the largest total population received the most Gen Z newcomers, including Texas (360,374), California (256,587) and Florida (175,889), and the Great Plains regions and Mountain West saw a higher percentage of young new residents.
“While the numbers may be lower in less populated states, the proportion of Gen Z newcomers to the total incoming population is significant,” Mann told the Daily Mail.

“For those spending more time at home, amenities like a dedicated home office and a larger yard are increasingly desirable, which often means moving further away from busy urban hotspots.”
