The announcement that GPT-4 will be released the following week by Microsoft Germany CTO Andreas Braun has aroused excitement in the AI community.
The innovative Large Language Model (LLM) series, including GPT-4, enables machines to understand natural language, previously only available to humans. Braun says that GPT-4 will bring new opportunities, including video processing and multimodality, which will improve the breadth of the models.
Heise, a German news site, attended an AI in Focus: Digital Launch event where the announcement was made. Marianne Janik, CEO of Microsoft Germany, spoke at the occasion and underlined the value creation potential of AI. She also described a historic turning point, calling the current development of AI and GPT-4 “an Apple iPhone moment.” She said companies should focus on properly preparing their staff to use AI and that disruptions don’t always result in job losses.
It is anticipated that GPT-4 will be integrated into Microsoft products, just as the company has been doing with AI in its products like Teams. The AI model could improve the Bing Chatbot and is likely to be accessible via the OpenAI API.
To commercialize the OpenAI technology and compete with Google in the AI arms race, Microsoft paid $10 billion for a 49% stake. With a significantly larger context window, increased reliability, and emerging new features, GPT-4 is anticipated to be a major improvement over GPT-3.5. GPT-4 can work well beyond text and in sensory modes, as shown by Google’s PALM-e, which previously showed the advantages of integrating image interpretation modes with LLMs.
The Microsoft CEO’s comments reflect a growing understanding of the potential of AI in the corporate world, with organizations increasingly looking to use the technology to increase productivity and simplify operations. We can anticipate further improvements to LLM and multimodal models as the sector develops, opening up new options. A significant milestone in the advancement of AI technology, the imminent arrival of GPT-4 will garner much attention.
