Microsoft launches Copilot AI assistant for businesses

Microsoft will launch its AI-powered virtual assistant, Copilot, to more than one million enterprise customers tomorrow. Copilot, which uses generative AI similar to ChatGPT, will be rolled out as part of Microsoft 365 subscriptions. With capabilities like summarizing emails, composing responses, transforming documents, and attending meetings, Copilot aims to act as a helpful intern for busy professionals.

While still in testing last month, this broader release will bring the AI assistant to a much larger number of Microsoft 365 business users. Integrating Copilot into popular Office apps is an important part of the Microsoft’s costly partnership with OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT. As such, Copilot is expected to be one of the most popular applications of generative AI.

Prices and availability

Copilot will cost businesses an additional $30 per user per month. The AI assistant will be available starting November 2 for Microsoft 365 customers in the United States.

Remembering Clippy

Longtime Microsoft users may remember Clippy, the animated clip assistant for Office until 2007. With its removal lamented by fans, Clippy was an early example of digital assistants in enterprise software. Copilot aims to provide that human-like help, but with much more advanced AI capabilities.
