Migrant mother and her 2 children drown while trying to cross the Rio Grande into Texas: ‘Tragedy’

A migrant woman and her two children drowned while trying to cross the Rio Grande into Texas.

Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas) announced Friday’s tragic incident in a news release and also complained that state officials denied federal agents access to a park near the river when they arrived to pick up the family, according to Border Report.

“This is a tragedy and the State has responsibility,” Cuellar said.

“Border Patrol was unable to assist the migrants or attempt to save them.”

Cuellar said the woman and children were trapped in the river’s currents near Shelby Park in Eagle Pass, Texas, adding that U.S. Border Patrol agents were unable to help them because Texas Department of Public Safety agents blocked access to the park at the beginning of the week.

He said that around 9 p.m. Friday, Border Patrol agents learned that six migrants were in danger in the river.

He said they tried to contact the Texas Military Department, the Texas National Guard and other state authorities by phone, but were unsuccessful.

Agents eventually met with members of the Texas Military Department and the Texas National Guard at the Shelby Park gate and told them that border crossers were in trouble, according to Cuellar.

He said Texas Military Department soldiers would not allow agents access to migrants, even in such an emergency, and would send a soldier to investigate.

However, on Saturday the bodies of the three migrants were recovered by Mexican authorities, the congressman said.

The state Department of Justice on Friday asked the U.S. Supreme Court to order Texas to stop blocking access to the 50-acre park, according to Border Report.

When asked about the incident, a spokesman for Governor Greg Abbott said: “Texas is holding the line at our southern border with miles of additional razor wire and anti-climb barriers to deter and repel record levels of illegal immigration invited by “President Biden’s reckless open border policies.”
