Mike Pence suspends 2024 presidential campaign

Former Vice President Michael Pence announced Saturday that he is suspending his 2024 presidential campaign.

The Republican presidential candidate made the announcement while speaking at the Republican Jewish Coalition leadership conference.

“I came here to say that I am clear: this is not my time,” Pence said.

“I want to thank our supporters across the country, our dedicated campaign family and the volunteers whose efforts have sustained us in this campaign,” he added. “Let me thank you all for the opportunity to serve as your vice president, it was the greatest honor of my life”

Pence’s exit from the race likely signals the end of his political career.

He previously served as governor of Indiana and a member of the House of Representatives.

Pence, a longtime pro-Israel stalwart, also served up plenty of red meat in his exit speech, including a call for a nationwide ban on anti-Semitic boycott, divestment and sanctions campaigns against Israel.

“Israel has no choice but to crush Hamas. The United States must support Israel today, tomorrow and all the hard days of fighting until Hamas is destroyed once and for all,” she said.

The former vice president was greeted with prolonged applause from the friendly audience before leaving the stage with his wife, former second lady Karen Pence.

Since announcing his candidacy in June, Pence has struggled to gain traction among GOP voters, despite his status as a former vice president.

His polls have never exceeded single digits, and during the election campaign he had been consistently overshadowed by his former boss, former President Donald Trump, and other contenders such as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy.

Pence has also faced the ire of many rank-and-file Republican voters who have consistently blamed him for not helping Trump in his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

Pence has long insisted that such activity on his part would have been unconstitutional.
