Missouri Democratic Rep. Sarah Unsicker (D-83) was removed from her committee assignments after she posted a photo on social media with an influencer the Anti-Defamation League calls a Holocaust denier and “far-right troll.”
However, the four-term representative, who is running for Missouri Attorney General in 2024, stated on her Substack that she was not aware of any formal investigation or complaint filed against her until House Speaker Dean Plocher (R-89), notified him Friday afternoon that his office had received a letter announcing his expulsion from his committee positions.
Missouri House Minority Leader Crystal Quade, also a Democrat, issued a news release Friday announcing Unsicker’s removal.
“During her tenure in the Legislature, Rep. Sarah Unsicker has proven herself to be a strong advocate for society’s vulnerable, especially children,” Quade wrote.
“However, he has recently chosen to use social media to promote people who espouse baseless conspiracies and racist and anti-Semitic ideologies that are antithetical to the values of inclusion, tolerance and respect that House Democrats are dedicated to defending.” ”he continued.

“As a result, I am removing Rep. Unsicker from all committees as she begins the process of evaluating her future as a member of the House Democratic Caucus.”
While post X containing the offending image was no longer visible, in a separate postUnsicker identifies the man he had met with as Charles C. Johnson, to whom the ADL devotes an entire page on its website.
Today is not the first time that a government official is “under investigation” for meeting with @JohnsonThought1. However, I have never received any type of formal inquiry. I would appreciate a formal list of accusations. https://t.co/QAHmQqW09e

In its article, the organization states that Johnson “stated the number of Jews murdered [in the Holocaust] was fake” in a 2017 “Ask Me Anything” session on Reddit.
The ADL also claims that Johnson founded a crowdfunding website that “reportedly raised more than $150,000 in 2017 for the legal defense of neo-Nazi Andrew Anglin.”

The blurb also notes that Johnson had been invited to the Capitol in October 2017 and February 2018 by former Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.) and Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), respectively.
In a statement Thursday, Unsicker expressed confusion about his dismissal and how it unfolded.
“I am confused by the statement that I have ‘promoted people’ who espouse ‘baseless conspiracy theories.’ “I have not been offered any explanation of how my behavior was different from my typical behavior, including my refusal to respond to defamatory representations about others,” he wrote.
On Substack, Unsicker wrote that “although I have not been formally removed from committees,” references to her as a member of the House Appropriations, Health, Mental Health and Senior Services Subcommittee had been removed from its official Chamber website. .
She also says she has been removed from the Children and Families Committee.
An email sent to Unsicker seeking comment was not immediately returned.
