Monopoly Players At Odds Over Unconventional Property Rule Causing Turmoil

People are divided after someone published a ‘chaotic’ Monopoly rule that appears to have gone overlooked by the majority of people.

There are few better ways to start a massive brawl with your family than pulling out the Monopoly board – before you know it, you’ve branded your nana a liar, squared up to your brother, and lashed small houses and hotels all over the place.

And now, one player has discovered an apparently obscure regulation that will most likely result in some kick-offs the next time you play. The person posted on the r/CasualUK forum, posting a screenshot of the rulebook, “Next time you play Monopoly, cause chaos by invoking this completely standard rule.”

So, what exactly is the rule?

So, if you and your family, like myself and most others, have played fast and loose with the rules, you may be utterly uninformed of what happens when you land on an empty property and don’t buy it.

“If you decide not to buy, the Banker must immediately auction the Property for sale to the highest bidder, beginning at any price that another player is willing to pay,” the rule states.

“Even though you declined the option of purchasing at the original price, you may still participate in the bidding.”

Things may quickly become nasty and lengthy

There is also no official beginning price for Monopoly auctions, with anyone eligible to start bidding from £1 – so things may quickly become nasty and lengthy.

A user admitted, “This is why a lot of Monopoly games go on unnecessarily long. If you follow the rules properly and auction properties, then they get bought up faster. Then there’s more chance of players having to pay rent, and therefore go bankrupt faster.”

“I swear Monopoly is the only game where every family has its own house rules owing largely to the fact that no one has read the rules for three generations,” added another.

A third added, “This is probably one of the most overlooked rules in board games in general. Many people don’t know about it somehow lol. :)”

Another user suggested, “I think a lesser known rule in monopoly is once you run out of houses in the box no one else can buy any. Absolute game changer when you just put 4 houses on everything and don’t upgrade to hotels to freeze everyone else out.”
