Mothers of Las Vegas teens accused of killing retired police officer disagree over their sons’ actions

The mothers of the two teenagers accused of deliberately running over and killing a retired police chief in Las Vegas last month have broken their silence, as one proclaimed that her son’s “side of the story” will be told.

Jesús Ayala, 17, and Jzamir Keys, 16, were arrested last month when they recorded themselves hitting Andreas Probst, 64, who was riding a bicycle on a neighborhood street, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

A judge ruled Wednesday that the teens will face their charges as adults.

The two mothers, who remained anonymous, went in different directions when asked about their son’s disturbing actions.

“I don’t know why he did this,” Ayala’s mother told KLAS. “I don’t know if God can forgive this.”

The 17-year-old was allegedly driving the Hyundai Elantra on August 14 when they encountered Probst.

The car hit the defenseless cyclist, throwing him onto the hood of the vehicle and leaving him to die on the side of the road.

Ayala was arrested the day of the deadly hit-and-run, but it took police five weeks to catch Keys, who was caught on a surveillance camera wearing a mask at the time.

Keys was caught on video he recorded, of which a school resource officer alerted police who received the video from a student.

“My son’s side of the story, ‘the truth,’ will be told, not the inaccuracies that the media will try to portray,” Keys’ mother told the outlet via text message.

The two face charges of murder with a deadly weapon, assault and attempted murder, Chief Deputy District Attorney Michael Watson said at both teens’ court hearings Wednesday, according to the Review-Journal.

During her appearance in Family Court on Wednesday, Keys was attended by two family members who cried during the hearing.

Before allegedly killing Probst, the two teens had gone on a small crime spree.

They are accused of running over a 72-year-old man, ramming another vehicle and stealing four cars that day.

Keys is believed to have been the driver of the first hit-and-run, police said at a news conference Tuesday, according to CBS.
